Assessing diatom-mediated fatty acids in intertidal biofilm: a new conservation concern

چکیده
Abstract Biofilm communities on intertidal mudflats are recognized as major producers of nutrients, especially fatty acids. The rising threats posed by both climatic and anthropogenic stressors increase the necessity understanding conserving these communities. Shorebirds provide a proxy for studying complex ecology biofilm because their heavy reliance acids from diatomaceous successful long-distance migration. Herein, we review feeding patterns migratory shorebirds, experimental design considerations sampling acid content biofilm, literature describing established emerging analytical methodology. Techniques analysis include commonly employed gas chromatography–flame ionization detection (GC/FID) chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with derivatization. Liquid (LC/MS) liquid chromatography–quadrupole time flight (LC/QTOF) newly techniques that enable derivatization to be eliminated. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT/IR), common instrument in chemistry laboratories, has applications research, specifically screening. Using combination methods is necessary improved source essential aquatic systems critical food shorebirds.

New bioactive fatty acids.
Many oxygenated fatty acids are bioactive compounds. Nocardia cholesterolicum and Flavobacterium DS5 convert oleic acid to 10 hydroxy stearic acid and linoleic acid to 10-hydroxy-12(Z)-octadecanoic acid. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PR3 converts oleic acid to the new compounds, 7,10-dihydroxy-8(E)-octadecenoic acid (DOD) through 10-hydroxy-8-octadecenoic acid, and racinoleic acid to 7,10,12-trihydrox...
متن کاملMetabolic Effects of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chickens: A Review
Chicken has been used as a suitable model for lipid metabolism studies, because dietary modifications especially dietary fat type can change chicken body composition. Fats act as a condense source of energy and certain fatty acids such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are required for both animal and human health. The n-3 PUFAs, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic ...
متن کاملBiosynthesis of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in the Oleaginous Marine Diatom Fistulifera sp. Strain JPCC DA0580
Studies of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) biosynthesis in microalgae are of great importance for many reasons, including the production of biofuel and variable omega 3-long chain PUFAs. The elucidation of the PUFA biosynthesis pathway is necessary for bioengineering to increase or decrease PUFA content in certain microalgae. In this study, we identified the PUFA synthesis pathway in the olea...
متن کاملA comprehensive method for determination of fatty acids in the initial oral biofilm (pellicle).
The acquired pellicle is a tenacious organic layer covering the surface of teeth, protecting the underlying dental hard tissues. Lipids account for about one quarter of the pellicle's dry weight and are assumed to be of considerable importance for their protective properties. Nevertheless, only preliminary information is available about the nature of lipids in the pellicle. Gas chromatography c...

Background: For understanding the roles of fatty acids on the induction of acrosome reaction which occurs under association of cholesterol efflux and PKA or PKC pathways in boar spermatozoa, metabolic fate of alone and combined radiolabeled 14C-oleic acid and 3H-linoleic acid incorporated in the sperm was compared, and behavior of cholesterol and effects of PKA and PKC inhibitors upon fatty aci...
